in to cnn. local reports out of the detroit area say an officer has been shot and killed in a standoff with a gunman who was barricaded in the detroit suburb of west bloomfield township. we're being told by our detroit affiliate that police have closed off roads in the area. we have no other details available right now. we are monitoring the situation and will bring you updates throughout the morning. >>> sad news on the campaign trail. a veteran police officer who was part of the security detail escorting president obama's motorcade, he has died after a tragic accident. >> at approximately 4:40 p.m. today, officer bruce saint laurent was involved in a motor vehicle accident during the presidential motorcade. officer saint laurent was transferred to st. mary's hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. officer saint laurent was a 20-year veteran of the jupiter police department, 18 years as a motor officer and his family has been notified. >> a pickup truck hit officer bruce saint laurent's motorcycle on i-95 in west palm beach. president obama says his thoughts and prayers are

the city is not doing, something the landlord is not doing. i see this in detroit, where i see grandmothers refusing to leave their homes, lying down in the offices of their mortgage companies, saying i am not leaving. people in chatanooga say they are not leaving this public housing unit. we are seeing this in chicago with the teachers' strike. that is one of the hotbeds of direct action. we see incredible work by the chicago anti eviction campaign, other homeless communities, saying we do not recognize the bank's ownership of these vacant houses. bank of america cannot just slap a sign on behalf of the homes in our neighborhood and say you cannot go in, where more and more people are being displaced by the capitalist system. they are going in and taking these places over, creating not just a place to live, but we're creating something that should not be owned by the bank's right now. >> sarah, did you know you're part of a larger movement, as you were organizing a rent strike in your building? >> organizing a rent strike in the building, it was not easy, knocking on every one store. -- ev

right now near detroit. it's an armed standoff with an accused cop killer. the west bloomfield police department confirms to cnn that one of its officers, who was shot late last night, has died. they're not naming the officer, but we know he is a 12-year veteran of the police force. he was responding to reports of gunfire in a home when the suspect turned his gun on the police. the armed suspect is now barricaded in that home. >>> power is starting to come back to millions of people who lost power in cuba. affected areas included all of havana, more than 2 million people there, cuba has an aging power grid so brief oughtages aren't unprecedented, by following a big storm a massive outage on this scale is really rare there. the west side state run newspaper blames the outage on a transmission line that feeds the western tip of the island. >>> president barack obama's numbers are looking up on two fronts this morning. his campaign says it raised more than mitt romney did in the month of august. a total of $114 million. compared to mitt romney's $111 million. more than half of that came
